Covid-19 update from our Chief Executive

When the pandemic hit our shores at the end of last year nobody could have foreseen the whole of the country going into lockdown in March, and restrictions lasting 6 months.  Three months on from the easing of the lockdown we are now facing rising numbers of positive tests and a return to tighter restrictions.  BEC continues to monitor the situation, new government advice and learn from our experience of the measures we have put in place to make your workplace at, or visit to, Westlakes Science Park as safe as it can possibly be.

BEC put a whole raft of measures in place at the beginning of lockdown based on our Safe 7 approach which have proven to be effective, we continue to implement additional and adapt existing measures as we monitor the impact.  We have reviewed our Safe 7 in light of the latest government announcement and updated guidelines, this changes little for BEC and our portfolio – other than a return to an emphasis on working from home where possible.  We are confident that the approach taken to date remains appropriate.  This is testament to the planning, hard work and implementation by the BEC Facilities Team who have done a fantastic job.

Our aim during the pandemic has not changed – our team, tenants, visitors and suppliers are our key priority.  We are all in this together!

We are experiencing strong demand for meeting & event spaces and our café, Eat @ the Park in Bassenthwaite Pavilion is also seeing increased visitor numbers.  Our approach to the increasing numbers of tenants, visitors and suppliers returning to Westlakes Science Park has been to ensure we have the processes and systems in place to ensure a Covid-secure environment in communal areas and meeting & event spaces and that our team is able to service customer requirements safely.

The feedback you have given us to date confirms that you feel safe in our Covid-secure environment.  The response has been overwhelmingly positive and we continue to put additional measures in place and improve others, in response to changing guidelines and feedback from you. These include:

  • Introduced the government’s Track & Trace QR codes in all our buildings, our meeting & event spaces and our on-site café at Westlakes, Eat @ the Park in Bassenthwaite Pavilion.
  • Installing Covid-secure reception area in the Innovation Centre similar to that introduced at Ingwell Hall
  • Installing electronic doors at Eat @ the Park, Westlakes Science Park
  • Considering additional measures to be implemented in toilets to allow increased numbers to use them safely as our buildings become busier
  • Updating our website to make the Covid-19 support pages more accessible
  • Updating our Covid-19 risk register and Communications plan to reflect the changing situation.

In closing, I want to say a huge, heartfelt thank you to the BEC team for getting us to this point, where we can be confident that we have done everything we can to make our estate as safe and secure for you as it can be.  We will not be complacent though, and we need to continue to support each other, show kindness and generosity to each other in these incredibly trying times. We will get through this together and our business community will be stronger as a result.

Your views on the measures we have taken to protect our team, tenants, visitors and suppliers are important to us – please do contact us if you have any concerns or suggestions.  I can promise that all feedback will be welcomed, carefully considered and actioned where appropriate.
