As esports prepares to make its Olympic debut in 2027, we’re proud to announce that Whitehaven is taking its place on the competitive gaming map.

Thanks to a £30,000 investment from global digital transformation leader Atos, ten professional-grade esports gaming stations will soon be installed at LEVELS - our brand-new digital and gaming hub.

Bringing Esports at LEVELS to Life

LEVELS is our £4m+ redevelopment of the former Whittles building on Duke Street, supported by Sellafield and BT. We’re transforming the space into a hub that combines esports, VR, immersive learning, creative studios and a café. Once open, it will become a centre for digital skills and entertainment right here in Cumbria.

Atos’ funding allows us to bring competitive gaming to the region from day one, powering local tournaments and enabling participation in national esports leagues.

Gemma Leadbetter, Chief Operating Officer here at BEC, said, “LEVELS is a one-of-a-kind offer that combines immersive entertainment and education in an inspiring space where young people can socialise and learn using state-of-the-art technology and step confidently into digital futures.

“Atos’ investment puts high-quality esports equipment into their hands right away and helps us build a sustainable programme that reaches schools, clubs and communities across West Cumbria.”

Building Futures Through Esports

Esports is already creating real career opportunities. In 2019, the UK sector generated more than 1,200 jobs in roles spanning event management, content creation and professional play - and this number is set to continue grow significantly.

With the British Esports Federation set to open its first dedicated Gaming Arena in Sunderland in 2026, our collaborative investment in LEVELS means Cumbria will also be firmly part of this national movement.

Gemma added, “The upcoming opening of the British Esports Arena in Sunderland really cements the importance of an esports presence here in Cumbria. Aside from the technical skills which taking part in esports develops, it also helps young people build transferable skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving, while creating lasting friendships and a real sense of community.”

Backed by Global Partners

Support from Atos reflects the value of investing in young people’s digital skills and futures.

Michael Herron, Head of Atos UK&I, said, "We're delighted to be able to support Sellafield and BEC through this important initiative that gives young people the opportunity to gain digital skills and, importantly, have fun! With many of our teams based in West Cumbria, this is a proud moment for us."

The ten esports stations funded by Atos are designed to deliver the same speed, visuals and performance found in professional esports venues, ensuring that our community has access to world-class technology from the very start.

Calling West Cumbria’s Future Champions

These new facilities are only the beginning. LEVELS is now recruiting players aged 11–18 to represent them in the British Esports Student Champs and to take part in our own local leagues.
